Debossing 101

By april , Mon, 06/26/2017 - 15:27

We love to see the creative deboss designs on books ordered each week, as unique as the people in the books. With so many new colors of cover material and deboss foil to choose from, it can be hard to know what will look best on the cover. We have a few recommendations to help with this process. Check back often to see more suggestions on design to help you make your selections wow your clients.

Blind vs. Clear

What's the difference? Basically, Clear is shiny, Blind is not.

Blind is just the impression of the hot stamp on your cover material.

It looks amazing on our Premium Leather lines and most Bookcloth colors.

If used on Metallic Leather, it will be very hard to see it, so you may be happier with Clear or a color foil for the deboss.

The only cover we do not recommend Blind on is Toasted Marshmallow Bookcloth. Due to the grain of the fabric, it tends to hide Blind debossing, so color foil will look best.

Clear is the impression of the hot stamp with clear foil on the cover material, for a shiny finish. The deboss may appear slightly darker, depending on the color of the cover material. It looks great on Cafe Leather, and most Bookcloth colors.

Color Combinations

We've added new deboss colors, and you can view swatches of them here. Classic combinations of warm tones together and cool tones together look beautiful, but don't be afraid to go outside the box. You can search our forum for photos from fellow photographers of debossing they've ordered. You'll find nearly every color combination you could want. Here are just a few from our forum:

Placement

When centering debossing on the cover, we've found that centering it on the cover board (not including the gutter) looks best to the eye.

If you'd rather center the deboss on the whole front of the book (including the gutter), be sure to place it there, and you can let us know your preference, so we will make sure the placement is where you'd like it.
